Quick + Easy Homemade Bread

Quick Bread Recipe

Is there anything that has been on your homemaking bucket list for awhile? Or am I the only weird one with a homemaking bucket list? Don’t answer that.

Well for awhile now I have wanted to make homemade bread, but things just haven’t always worked out. One time I purchased all of the ingredients, including yeast, and never baked it. Another time I purchased everything, including yeast, but had the wrong yeast. And another time, I tried to make my own sourdough starter and for some reason, it just didn’t take.

So once I came across this quick and easy bread recipe in the Backyard Homestead book, I decided to try it because it just so happened that I had all of these ingredients on hand. And guess what?!?! You don’t need yeast or starter for this recipe! It’s a quick rise recipe that just uses regular ole’ baking powder for the rise and normal ingredients that you can find in most kitchens. I learned a long time ago to always stay stocked up on all of the baking essentials.

I wish I could take credit for this deliciousness, but I can’t. However I will totally share it here for you! I will say that this bread recipe tastes a bit similar to a sweet cornbread in my opinion, even though there’s nothing corn in it. It’s really yummy and makes the perfect warm bread to go with your meals, for snack time or to take over to a gathering! You’d be the talk of the neighborhood if you bring in a loaf of homemade bread, just saying!

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cup flour

  • 1/2 tbs baking powder

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1/4 cup softened butter

  • 1 egg

  • 3/4 cup milk

  • A dash of Salt (I don’t really measure)

How to make it:

  • Combine dry ingredients in a bowl

  • Cream your butter and sugar, add in egg and then milk and mix well

  • Quickly add in the dry ingredients and mix enough to moisten

  • Stir into a greased 9x5 loaf pan and bake at 350*

  • Takes 30-40 minutes to bake (or until tester comes out clean)

  • Let it cool for about 10-15 minute before flipping it out of the loaf pan

  • Add butter and enjoy!

I hope you enjoy this delicious recipe. Make sure to stay in touch on our blog and Facebook page for more homesteading and homemaking posts. We love the Backyard Homestead resource and think it’s truly a homesteading gem.

Now, go bake some bread!
