Creating a Homeschool Space in the Dining Room

Dining room turned school room…it has recently happened all over the world!

Here we are currently gathering our supplies and trying to make our home accommodate teaching our children for this upcoming year. It’s definitely making our dining room look a tad bit different, but I am enjoying the process. While I believe that you just need a table and some basic supplies (along with a good curriculum), my goal is to create a space that still leaves our home feeling stylish and clean, but also allowing us a way to have our “homeschool area” organized and accessible. Since we don’t have an extra room to turn into a school room (that would only work if our girls decided to room together), I am turning to what many parents use as a homeschool area - the dining table. Our table is where we gather for meals, conversation, art work, play dough, painting and more. It only makes sense to use this space for our schooling this upcoming year.

With so much uncertainty this school year, I know many parents are considering homeschool. While our decision had nothing to do with the current pandemic and was made prior to it, I want to inspire other mamas who may feel the calling to do this. While I can search Pinterest and Instagram and see all of the beautiful school rooms that homeschool families have, I know that we truly don’t need that. With a few good storage spaces, a bookshelf (with more books on the way) and a good table (we have a larger one being built), anyone can create a cozy space for their family.

I’m sure as time moves on and we get comfortable in our new lifestyle, this scene can change some here and there. I plan to add an Ikea cart to house their binders and curriculum books and thankfully our girls already have their own desks in their room for when they need to escape some. But I am currently enjoying glass jars for smaller items, vintage finds for art supplies and having majority of our books in one space for easy access. While it’s not normal to see these things in a dining room, making your home a haven is all about what functions well for you and your family. At this season in our life, this is what will work for us! No it isn’t a dining room from a magazine, but it’s one my kids will enjoy and remember. It’s going to be space where we’ll create wonderful memories and probably some crazy, chaotic ones too! #beingreal

I also have to share something so precious that I recently found on Instagram. This alphabet poster popped up into my feed one day and immediately I was in love! The artist behind this series, is a beautiful mama with a shop full of beautiful materials to help teach little ones and even decorate around the home. Her illustrations are so fun and whimsical - they make these letters come to life in a way I’ve yet to see before.

Make sure to check out Veronica’s shop for the prettiest botanical prints and products. Her favorites of mine include the Alphabet book, Professions flash cards for kids, and alphabet flash cards. Check below at the bottom of this post to see some examples of her beautiful work!

Until then, drop in the comments if you’re considering homeschooling your children this upcoming year. If you already homeschool, share with me what works for your family’s organizational needs!
