Kid's Garden Journal Activity Unit

Garden Journal for Kids

Who here is ready to dream up their perfect garden? Today I am going to share a fun activity with you to do with your kiddos this summer or school year. I have also provided all of the links below for you to complete this fun unit as a family. Of course you can add on and have even more fun with it.

I felt the urge to work on some fun units with the kids this summer, mostly because I am trying to slowly ease us into homeschooling before the new year starts. As we prepare to start building our gardens in a few weeks (it’s late so they will be fall gardens), I wanted to focus on gardening, plant life cycle and flower parts for this unit. As we began reading our books and discussing our favorite garden, I had the idea to put together a garden journal for our kids.

I have provided links for you below, but feel free to add to this in whichever way you intend to. For our gardening journal we are creating a vegetable garden page, a berry bush page, a flower garden and we are completely worksheets on the plant life cycle as well as the parts of a flower. Additionally, I plan to have my oldest write a paragraph about gardening and I also plan to allow them to draw their own flower beds. As we work on these books, they continue to evolve. I also recommend the reboot Gather Garden game — my kids love it! However it appears that the game is hard to find these days.

For units such as this, I just went through our books that we had already had and pulled out anything that I felt fit this topic. We have a small book on weather, many books on gardening and how flowers grow and even a butterfly life cycle book. While we have many books that we are using for this unit, you do NOT need to have this. One or two books will suffice for you! I personally loved We are the Gardeners, The Plant Life Cycle and Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt. A simple book or two is all you need, along with some fun printables!

And of course, nothing compares to really getting outside and planting! Have your children help you, show them the parts of the plant and let them plant right beside you!
