Easy Chocolate Chip French Toast
Okay so I am going to share an embarrassing secret with you. Up until recently, I really knew nothing about french toast. I believe my mom made it for us growing up sometimes, but it wasn’t something I ate a lot or even requested.
I’ve heard my husband order this breakfast staple quite often and I’ve heard him talk about how it’s his favorite, not to mention I am always looking for fresh, new breakfast ideas for my kids. I like homemade items that are all warm and cozy for breakfast because I feel it’s the best way to start their day.
So I did like any modern mama does and I searched Pinterest for french toast recipes and once I realized that it only required a few basic ingredients, I just went for it.
This is now a weekly breakfast treat in our home and I have to tell you, it’s delicious! It has quickly become one of my favorite recipes and no, it isn’t some crazy healthy recipe either. This is breakfast food that can also be a dessert!
While you can easily make french toast with basic bread, I have found that french brioche is perfect for french toast! We love the brand pictured below from Trader Joe’s because it’s already buttery and the thickness of the slices keeps the bread from getting too soggy or tearing apart.
Ingredients needed:
Bread (French Brioche Bread is great for this or Texas Toast)
Eggs (1-2 depending on serving)
Vanilla Extract
Cinnamon
Milk
Pinch of Salt
Powdered sugar for dusting
Cocholate Chips
Butter
Large, wide rimmed bowl
Whisk
Syrup (it’s so good alone that you may not even need syrup!)
I am not really a girl who measures, but I’ll do my best here!
Recipe below makes approximately 6 slices (just double it up for more)
Pour enough milk to cover the bottom of the bowl (about 1/3 cup) and add one egg.
Add, a capful of vanilla, pinch of salt and sprinkle enough cinnamon in the bowl to completely cover the top of the “mixture.”
Whisk away!
Gently place your toast in the bowl to coat it and then flip and coat the other side. Do not leave the bread in too long because it will get soggy and fall apart.
Place coated bread onto buttered griddle and cook evenly on both sides. Sprinkle cinnamon on both sides again as you flip it to help it get more of that yummy, cinnamon flavor.
Once cooked completely on both sides, transfer to plate. Top with one square of butter, powdered sugar for dusting and a dusting of chocolate chips.
Enjoy (add syrup if desired).
I told you this was easy! This is such a great breakfast meal that tastes best warm and straight off the griddle. The chocolate gets all gooey and the butter melts in all the right places and it’s divine!
Try it for yourself. Don’t stress over measurements, just whisk away and put all the cinnamon, chocolate and sugar on it! ;)
